The Pros and Cons of a Ventless Dryer
If you’re a homeowner in Canada, the likelihood that you have a dryer is about 80%. There is also a really good chance that the dryer you have is vented outside your home. Because nearly all residential dryers are vented to the outdoors—but there is another option. A ventless dryer is an ideal solution for several applications, including small homes and apartments.
If you're replacing an old dryer or installing a new one, and you’re on the fence about whether or not a ventless dryer is right for you, read this helpful guide from the experienced professionals at Mr. Appliance® to make an informed decision.
What is a Ventless Dryer?
A ventless dryer is one that has no outdoor ventilation system. Typically, a dryer has a vent system that takes any moisture that has been turned into steam by the heat of the dryer and expels it outside through a ventilation hose. Ventless dryers use a different method to disperse the moisture generated by the drying process, and they are available in one of two types:
Condenser Dryers
Condenser dryers are one of the most common styles of ventless dryers sold today.
They work by drawing in the cooler air from the laundry room and heating it in the same manner as a vented dryer. Rather than exhausting the heated air through a hose, a heat exchanger cools it down. As the temperature drops the moisture is converted back into a liquid and is collected in a chamber and reheated to continue the cycle until the drying process is complete. At the end of the cycle, the water is collected in a tray for easy disposal by the user.
Heat Pump Dryers
Heat pump dryers have only recently been made available for purchase in North America. Though relatively new to the region, their high efficiency has made them a popular choice for those who want to save on energy costs. With this type of dryer, the condenser is absent and the heat pump continuously cycles the heated air throughout the drum without creating hot air or moisture within the laundry room.
Ventless Dryers Pros and Cons
Ventless dryers are the preferred choice in many European homes, or where the size and age of the architecture may be unsuitable to accommodate a traditional vented dryer. Before you purchase your next appliance, consider our list of pros and cons to help with your decision.
Pros of Ventless vs. Vented Dryers
Versatility: Since a ventless dryer takes up less space than a vented dryer and there is no need to cut any holes in your exterior walls, this dryer can be installed almost anywhere within the home. This makes ventless dryers a great choice for older homes or historically significant homes where modifying the home in any way is not an option.
Efficiency: These dryers use less energy than a conventional model by recycling the heated air rather than creating it. This can help lower your energy bills and is also better for the environment.
Ease of Installation: The only requirements for a ventless dryer setup are the power receptacle, which needs to be either three or four prongs and adequate airflow around the unit.
Easier on Fabrics: The smaller drum and lower volume of heat are gentler on fabrics, which can extend the lifespan of your clothing.
Cons of Ventless vs. Vented Dryers
Limited Capacity: Large families may struggle with reduced load capabilities and increased drying times. This obstacle can usually be overcome by running smaller loads more frequently, but this will likely offset the energy savings of a ventless dryer.
Bigger Investment: While you can save money over the lifetime of the appliance through increased efficiency, a ventless dryer will require a larger initial investment than a vented dryer.
Increased Humidity: In tight spaces or humid environments, the added moisture produced by a ventless dryer may lead to mold or mildew growth. This can be especially problematic in already humid environments. If your laundry room shares space with your pantry, that can also present challenges.
When choosing between a vented or ventless dryer, consider how often you do laundry, the size of your family, and your budget.Call Mr. Appliance Today for Your VentlessDryer Repairs
